The mobile pantry of the Geneva County Community Church celebrates its first anniversary

DOTHAN, Alabama (WTVY) – The Geneva County Community Church mobile pantry is celebrating its first anniversary. The association began its mission on April 14, 2020.

Over the past year, volunteers from the Canton of Geneva have worked to help feed those in need, especially after a difficult year with the pandemic.

Every second Tuesday of the month, nearly 50 volunteers spend their morning at the Geneva County Agricultural Center packing bags and boxes of food.

“We’re just feeding the county of Geneva, God told us to do it, told us to feed his sheep and that’s what we’re doing,” said Robert Michaels, director of the Geneva County Church Food Pantry.

The Geneva County Community Church mobile pantry has started serving 200 to double and serving 400. They say they continue to grow as they work alongside the church mobile pantry Coffee County Community.

“We still have newcomers who say they haven’t heard of it yet,” said James Shiver, deputy director of the Geneva County Food Pantry.

2020 has been a difficult year for everyone due to COVID-19. The groups have lost members along the way due to COVID-19.

“In Coffee County we lost one of our good workers, Ben Moates, he was the Coffee County Sheriff, he was there every month and I would like to remember him and his family because ‘he was so loyal, “BJ Caldwell, Director of Coffee County Community Church Mobile Food Pantry, said.

“We had a few women from Samson and we lost them to COVID and when you work next to someone it’s different, if you have it in your own family,” Shiver said.

Their mission continued.

“We never ran out of food and we always had food for everyone,” Michaels said.

On Tuesday, volunteers distributed more than 16,000 pounds of food, most of which is provided by the Wiregrass Area Food Bank.

Geneva County Pantry Gifts are every second Tuesday of the month at 9:00 a.m. and Coffee County Pantry Gifts are every last Tuesday of the month.

The Geneva County and Coffee County pantries accept bagged and cash donations.
