FLORENCE, SC – The city of Florence could soon set up a second community development company.

City Council’s Community Development Committee voted unanimously on the motion by City Councilor Everyz McCall and a second by City Councilor Pat Gibson-Hye Moore to recommend that City Council ask city staff to research the training process. of a community development corporation to work on issues related to community development.

The committee is chaired by Councilor Lethonia “Peaches” Barnes.

A community development corporation is a non-profit organization created to provide services and facilitate community development. The entity is headed by a board of directors and headed by a chief executive officer.

The committee discussed at length the options available to the board, including hiring an outside person to run the company, hiring a new municipal staff member to run the company, or using a member current municipal staff to run the company. The committee also discussed how many board members the city can appoint and remain eligible for certain grants.

The recommendation will likely be presented to the full city council at its August meeting. The exact composition of the corporation will likely be determined on the basis of the recommendation of municipal staff.
