Debbie Skubiak appointed Director of Alliance Community Pantry

Debbie Skubiak has led a life of generosity, and she will continue this mission as the manager of the Alliance Community Pantry.

Skubiak was named manager last month, but she’s certainly not new to the pantry. She started volunteering seven years ago after retiring from a 35-and-a-half-year teaching career in Marlington and, since 2015, has been in charge of Monday in the Pantry with Judy Douglas.

A graduate of Marlington High School, she received her BA from Mount Union College and her MA from Kent State University. She taught fifth grade in the district, first eight grades at Washington Elementary School, and ended her career at Lexington Elementary School. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at Mount Union.

In addition to her teaching career and volunteering at the pantry, she has always been involved in the community. She served for 10 years on the board of Alliance Habitat for Humanity where she enjoyed working on houses, especially painting, and she is also very active at First Christian Church.

But she is currently focusing on the pantry. “I made some great friends in the pantry and it’s a very comfortable giving back situation,” she said. “The pantry has changed so much, and it’s always getting better.”

Skubiak joins a fine line of managers during the first 10 years of the Pantry. Ron and Corliss Vuksta, Vicky Dugan, Rich McCrea, Don and Judy Kingan, Dr David Goldman and David Floyd have also served since the pantry opened in 2010.

“We are happy to have Debbie in this role due to her experience as a day team leader,” said Kathy Kramer, Chairman of the Board. “It will be an easy transition for her.”

Skubiak will work closely with Terra Faulkner, Warehouse Manager, Day Team Leaders Judy Douglas, Jim Greiner, Joan Gecina and Jim Perone, and all other volunteers.
