Worship services

ALVERDA – The Christian Church in Alverda will meet for worship from 9:50 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. on Sunday.

We will worship together to meet the needs of church families, our community, and our nation.

Join in praise, prayer and fellowship, and thanksgiving for God’s sake.

Pastor Travis Trimble will deliver the morning message. Communion will be served. Prayer requests and praise for answered prayer will be observed, and the music and fellowship will continue.

BLAIRSVILLE – The United Presbyterian Church, 137 N. Walnut St., will hold in-house and online worship with Reverend Timothy Monroe at 11 am Sunday.

The scriptures are Hebrews 10: 11-14, 19-25 and Mark 13: 1-8.

The Presbyterian Church of Crete, 25 Brady Road, Indiana, will meet for worship with Reverend Katie Ward Stear at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The scriptures are Psalm 1, Deuteronomy 26: 1-11, and the sermon is titled “An Attitude of Gratitude”.

Special music will be provided by Lily Carone and the choir.

The Clara Henderson Mission Group meets Thursday at 6:30 pm and will begin a new devotion, “The Easter Women” by Liz Curtis Higgs.


HOMER CITY – The United Methodist Church in Homer City will be holding an adult Sunday school at 8:30 a.m. and a service at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

This week’s sermon, “The Barren Season,” is based on 1 Samuel 1: 4-20.

INDIANA – Grace United Methodist Church, 50 S. 7th St., will be holding services at 9 and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Pastor Bill Blair continues his series of sermons, “The Great Trios,” with his message “Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark” and the scriptures from Acts 15: 30–40.

At the traditional 9 am service, the Chancellor’s Choir will sing “We are Called” and the Agape Bells will perform “It Is Well with My Soul”. The worship music from the 11am contemporary service will be conducted by Pastor Will Pinos, and the song list is “Relentless,” “Rattle! “,” King Of My Heart “and” House of Miracles “.

The children’s church is available during services and the crèche is open all morning. There are two new series of Sunday schools for children at 10:10 a.m. These are Route 66 for Grades 3 to 5 and Bible-‘n-Life for Kindergarten to Grade 2.

MARION CENTER – The first United Methodist Church at Marion Center will hold a service at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Pastor Erica will deliver a message titled “Anxiety vs. Cheer ”.

Scripture is Proverbs 12: 25-28.


SHELOCTA – The Shelocta Presbyterian Community Church, 182 S. Ridge Road, invites everyone to join the Sunday worship service at 10 am.

Pastor Kathy Nice will deliver the sermon titled “I Want to Believe in God, But … Christians Are Intolerant”.

Members of Calvary Bible Church invite the community to their Sunday services.

Worship is at 11 a.m. Pastor John Traxler will deliver the message “Masters and Servants”.

Sunday school is at 10 a.m., with a focus on Joshua 2: 1-24. There will be a prayer meeting and a Bible study at 6:00 pm with the message “The light at the end”.

Harvest Home Sunday / Blessing of the Veterans

BLAIRSVILLE – The Lutheran Church in Hebron, 125 N. Liberty St., and Pastor John Smaligo invite the public this Sunday to Harvest Home Sunday. Non-perishable food will be collected and blessed for the church pantry. Hebron will organize a food distribution on December 11 for registered families in need. Donations are always welcome.

Also this Sunday, Smaligo will offer a special blessing to our veterans on the occasion of November 11th. The church congregation invites all past and present members of our armed forces to join them. Start of worship at 10:45 a.m.

Sunday school for children / adults

BLAIRSVILLE – The Lutheran Church in Hebron, 125N Liberty St., continues to host its Sunday School for Children online.

This course is published by Rev. John Smaligo every Sunday morning and can be viewed any time after 9:00 a.m. Get ready to listen to wonderful songs with Charlotte Robertson on the last Sunday of each month. This can be viewed on the Lutheran Church in Hebron Facebook page. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the weekly lesson. Please join us.

In addition, the Adult Sunday School class meets in Hebron every Sunday at 9:30 am The focus is on a “The Chosen Ones” video series. Digging deeper into the stories and context of the people and events of the gospels, Season 1 introduces Simon Peter, Nicodemus, Mary Magdalene, Matthew, and Jesus in ways never before seen in cinema. We hope to see you there.

Blood collect

BLAIRSVILLE – Connect Church of the Greater Blairsville Cooperative Parish is hosting a blood drive from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on November 19 at Helman Hall of Blairsville First UMC, 50 Walnut St.

Donors can register by going to and selecting the Connect Church location using zip code 15717.

Free parking is available on the church grounds and donors must enter through the back door of the church.

Sion’s drive-thru November

On the third Saturday of each month, the Zion Lutheran Church’s community pantry operates behind the wheel. Food is distributed to residents of Indiana County only. Participants stay in their vehicle throughout the process.

Food will be distributed from 10 a.m. to noon on November 20. Participants will proceed through the rear parking lot of the church as usual, located at 100 S. Sixth St., Indiana. They are reminded not to block the roadway or the parking lot exit.

No registration or income document is required to receive food bags through the vehicle window. Names are not registered, but the number of families is counted. Up to two families in the same vehicle can receive food, but one person from each family must be present. Wearing a mask is compulsory for everyone’s safety.

Changes may be underway for the distribution of the pantry in the New Year. Any changes to the procedures will be announced in the Gazette.

Online Thanksgiving Service

BLAIRSVILLE – The Lutheran Church in Hebron will be offering a brief Thanksgiving service on Facebook Live at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24.

This will be online only with the cult led by Pastor John Smaligo. The service will remain on the church’s Facebook page for viewing at your convenience. The bulletin for this brief service will be distributed at the end of the service on November 21 and will also be placed in the bulletin box on the railing outside the main entrance to the church.

The church encourages you to take this opportunity to give thanks from your home by viewing this service with those who may be meeting with you on Thanksgiving.

Hymn sing

COMMODORE – The Indiana / Cambria County Anthem and Gospel will be held November 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the East Mahoning Baptist Church, 4988 Purchase Line Road.

Come sing, come listen. Everyone is welcome.

Advent sessions for guys

The Christian Witness, with its media ministries on radio station WDAD and on FM radio at WMUG-FM, has sponsored a rally for men in the greater Indiana area in recent years. These sessions are scheduled for both Lent and Advent, and feature local leaders as speakers.

The Grit Guys meetings for this upcoming Advent season will start on Friday, November 26 (next to the first Sunday in Advent) and will continue every Friday in December, including Friday morning, December 24.

All men from the larger Indiana community are invited to attend these important sessions, which will be held in the back dining room of Eat’n Park in White Township.

Participants will be greeted with a free cup of coffee at 7:00 a.m. and the program will run at 7.15 a.m. There will be a different speaker each of the five Fridays, who will address the general theme “Know you better… better!

At 8 am, all the men present will be dismissed, either to go to their place of work or to stay in the restaurant for a “Dutch-Treat” breakfast of their choice.

JD Varner is the organizer of these meetings.

Speakers are Dr. Richard Carter on November 26, Pastor Howard Greenfield on December 3, Ben Glaser on December 10, Kenny Schramko on December 17, and the series will close Jim Geiko on December 24.

Reservations are not necessary; come and bring a friend.

Advent study on Dickens

BLAIRSVILLE – A midweek Advent study on Dickens arrives at the Lutheran Church in Hebron, 125 N. Liberty St.

The Advent Bible Study of “A Christmas Carol” will take place at 7:00 pm on the four Wednesdays of Advent: December 1, 8, 15 and 22.

If you have your book, dig it up, read “A Christmas Carol”, watch some movies. Join us, maybe there will be Christmas pudding at the end.

White gift service

BLAIRSVILLE – Pastor John Smaligo and the Lutheran Church in Hebron invite to join them on December 12 at 10:45 a.m. for their special white gifts service.

The church choir will perform during this program. All are invited to join us today. In addition, the Christmas Eve service will take place at 10 p.m. on December 24. More details will follow for the church’s December services.

Kilometer cookies

HOMER CITY – St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 279 Yellow Creek Street, will be holding their cookie sale from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, December 11 in the church’s social hall, while supplies last.

Many varieties will be available for the mix and match. There is a limit of 6 dozen.

No early risers. Please bring your own containers.

Those present should wear a mask and practice social distancing.
