Carrollton Girl Scout troop opening community pantry in library

CARROLLTON – Carrollton Girl Scout Troop 6110 is establishing a Community Food Pantry in the Carrollton Public Library to help the community fight hunger.

“We’re doing a community food pantry to help people in need,” Scout Ella Hunn said. “We’ll put canned goods in there and people can go get what they need.”

The troupe is made up of Ella Hunn, Dixie Harris, Bella Harden, Layla Hunn, Faith Carrington, Jessica Crain and Susan Bowman.

Troupe leader Tonya Hunn said the pantry will be inside the library, 509 S. Main St., in a cabinet the troupe purchased. The opening is scheduled for May 19.

Tonya Hunn said the troupe will restock the cabinet weekly, but hopes the community will also help.

“Anyone can donate to the firm,” she said. “People can come and take what they need, leave things they don’t need at home.”

Scout Dixie Harris said it’s a good project for the community.

“We help people in our community,” Harris said.

Tonya Hunn said the girls wanted to help in the best way possible.

“We asked the girls what we could do for the community with the money we raised from our cookie sales,” she said. “We said there was no grocery store in town, so that’s something they wanted to do.”

Layla Hunn said the troupe wanted to take care of their neighbors.

“The community is our family,” she said.

Once open, the pantry will be available during library hours from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, and 10 a.m. a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
