Atkins Community Development is a place that does it all, with help from the Winston-Salem Foundation

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WGHP) – It may not look like it, but this building on the campus of Winston-Salem State University is a one-stop-shop for housing, start your own business and learn to be a community leader.

It’s the Simon Green Atkins Community Development Corporation.

“We build homes for first-time buyers. We help entrepreneurs grow their businesses here in our business incubator. We have a small community garden to increase produce availability in our neighborhood. We also work with neighborhood organizations to try to help them achieve their goals,” said Carol Davis, executive director of Atkins Community Development Corporation.

Annette Nichols is an aspiring entrepreneur and customer of Atkins. She saw a need where others did not, her brother has type 2 diabetes and could not read the documents given to him to explain his illness.

“My company is called ‘Butterflies Touch’ is it an app for type two diabetes, for people who can’t read well, to help them understand that they would manage or prevent diabetes,” Nichols said. .

The Winston-Salem Foundation is a big part of helping the Atkins Community Development Corporation develop the neighborhoods around Winston-Salem State University.

“They help us with operating funds, their dollars, and help us when we build homes for first-time home buyers. They’ve helped us with our work for small businesses, and their funding has been unrestricted dollars that you can use for operations in any way we need,” Davis said.

So whether it’s a home, business or community involvement…this is the place to do it.
