South Africa – Maranatha Community Church Johannesburg, South Africa, has invested in two sets of Astera Titan tubes for its busy 3,000-seat auditorium in Kempton Park. They were purchased as part of an ongoing commitment to providing excellent technical output for their services and events.

Nereen Bradshaw is Media Manager at Maranatha and is responsible for content creation and weekly oversight of lighting, media and video at the Kempton Park campus, with which she has been involved for ten years. The auditorium is used for three Sunday services each week (reaching approximately 5,000–6,000 people across the three services), and a live event is held each Friday for approximately 400 young people. Four times a year there is a large mid-week Praise and Worship Service to coincide with the end of school terms. Services include a set of four or five songs of praise and worship, followed by a motivational message.

All of these presentations and services include live musical performances.

Nereen and the Maranatha team, led by Senior Pastor Leonard Stone, are always on the lookout for new technology and material to enhance their productions, but this is the resident church band’s album launch. , Branch, which prompted the purchase of Titan Tube.

“We wanted something really special for this event,” Nereen explained.

The church had purchased other kits, including Robe mobile lights from Astera’s South African distributor, DWR Distribution, in recent years. So when DWR’s Robert Izzett came on site and demonstrated the Titan Tubes, Nereen and Leonard were suitably impressed and ordered two sets. 16 tubes in total.

Battery-powered operation and the ability to regulate and optimize consumption and run time was a big selling point for them, Nereen explained, adding that they also had the option of running them with a cable if necessary.

The Titans are suspended above the stage, attached via carabiners to catenary wires of varying lengths and add real depth and dimension to the performance area. This configuration means that the tubes can be easily moved if necessary. Currently they are programmed to work in pairs in a four pixel configuration from the home lighting console.

Nereen is impressed with the brightness of the Titans and most of the time they only run at around 40% intensity! They provide complementary kinetic effects above the vocals, which look great on camera.

In the future, Maranatha intends to use the Tubes in other creative ways, including as portable lighted props for danceware at special services such as Easter and Christmas celebrations. Over the next month, they plan to use the Tubes in a room with a wet concrete floor, for lighting effects while recording another music video for the band.

In addition to brightness, Nereen appreciates the fabulous Astera color mixing – thanks to the award-winning Titan LED Engine – the fact that any shade or tint can be selected and reproduced instantly, as well as the possibilities for creative programming with pixel/area , intensities or color sequences.

“They bring a whole new dimension to the scene and give it a real modern edge, which is great for engaging younger members of the congregation and presenting more energetic and invigorated musical segments! Conversely, the use of very slow color or intensity effects brought a gentle kinetic “rain” experience, so they can be used for upbeat praise as well as quieter worship.” , explained Nereen.

She also mentions the importance of the distributor relationship when investing in a brand, describing DWR as “brilliant – very friendly, helpful and super knowledgeable”.

Nereen works with another full-time staff member, Kaylin Dickson, as well as a large team of regular volunteers covering all the different technical departments. Nereen and Kaylin hold regular training sessions to ensure “The Crew” stays informed, sharp and up to date with the kit.
